Project Overview

When Orbit Baby asked us what we thought of Magento compared to using Django and Satchmo. We relied on our experience with both systems to give them an thorough review of the advantages and disadvantages of both. We’ll post a breakdown of our review later, but in a nutshell if all you want is e-commerce and you are good with PHP then Magento may be a good fit. On the other hand if you’d like to be able to add a blog, forum, or anything else to your site and still use the same administration interface and the same user information throughout the site, well Django and Satchmo are your best choice. Django is also much more scalable long term, more search engine friendly, faster… must we go on. Of course, we are a little biased :)

It took us a solid week to find a way to load a variable sized full bleed background image with HTML and CSS that is re-sizable and moves with the screen. Then we needed to add a sticky footer just for fun. That was just the front end. We built customized product types that allow Orbit Baby staff to add products and then group them into “modes”. The modes add a group of products to the shopping cart with a single click.
